The Honda Activa brand dominates the scooter industry in India. Since Honda entered the Indian market after its split from Kinetic in 2000, the Activa scooter has been the first choice of many Indian families.
The sales numbers are enough to prove the dominance of the Activa brand as it owns nearly 51% market share of the entire scooter sales in India. To ensure Activa’s influence, Honda has regularly updated the scooters. We will be discussing one of the recent versions of the Activa brand, the 5G or 5th Generation Activa.
The cosmetic updates on the Activa 5G make it somewhat appealing and give the scooter a stylish and sleek appeal. It now comes with LED headlights along with dual chrome inserts on the front body. While the LED headlights deliver the scooter a fresh touch, you might feel slight discomfort during rainy or foggy days. Activa’s fit and finish have been one of its most significant selling points, especially its metal body.
There are four variants of the scooter - Standard, Standard -Limited, Deluxe and Deluxe - limited. Speaking about the instrument cluster, Honda has shifted to a semi-digital one since the Activa 125. It further has an ‘eco’ indicator for the Deluxe variant. This eco light assists you to ensure optimum efficiency. The switches are of top quality and function well too. The Activa 5G starts at an ex-showroom price of Rs. 55,934 and goes up to Rs. 58,199 for the top variant, the Activa 5G Deluxe Limited.
The premium Honda scooter is powered by a single-cylinder, air-cooled, 110 cc engine, which generates a max power of 8 bhp at 7500 rpm and a peak torque of 9.6 Nm at 5,500 rpm, just like the one in 4G. The Activa scooter is hailed for its brilliant mileage of 60 kmpl coupled with a fuel tank capacity of 5.3 L. One can quickly expect a riding range of over 300 km with a full tank.
Overall, Honda has played it safe with the Activa 5G and has kept the updates on the cosmetic level. But will it be sufficient to sustain its top-selling rank significantly when the competition has improved exponentially?
In terms of competition, the Activa 5G competes with TVS Jupiter, Honda Dio and Yamaha Fascino in the scooter market.

Honda Activa 5G Expert Review
How is the design of the Honda Activa 5G?
The first Honda Activa was launched in 1999. It was one of the heaviest scooters at that time, especially when compared to the likes of then competition, TVS Scooty Pep and Hero Pleasure. Fast forward to 2 decades later, you still see the Activa DNA even in the 5th generation of the scooter.
It still has a robust outlook coupled with modern features. When you closely observe the scooter, you realise Honda has included some thoughtful add-ons that enhance 5G’s design quotient.
While the design remains essentially the same as the 4G, the front apron’s dual chrome inserts and the full-fledged LED headlight. You also get a few new colour schemes, such as the Yellowish Gold shade, making the scooter appealing.
The scooter has an overall premium finish because of the add-ons like the new textured black panels. It also features 4G’s single-piece pillion grab rail, which has a silver shade. The chrome branding of the Activa 5G name on the metal side panels adds to the scooter’s premium appeal.
Opposite the storage compartment, right below the seat, there is a hook that is used to support carry bags or shopping bags. It is quite a utilitarian design. You also get hook-like support below the instrument cluster and switch gears.
The storage capacity under the seat is not too huge, but it is enough to accommodate a small or medium-sized helmet along with a few other tit-bits.
In other words, the design is sturdy, stylish, ergonomic and shows off the essence of being the Activa scooter.
How does the Honda Activa 5G ride?
As you begin your ride, you realise why Activa has been able to dominate the Indian market for so long. One of the reasons is its great mileage, comfort, premium appeal and ride quality.
The Activa still carried the same 109 cc engine, which produces 8 bhp of max power at 7500 rpm and a peak torque of 9 Nm at 5500 rpm.
The initial pickup is very refined and feels smooth. Up to 60 kmph, the engine runs effectively without any hindrance. The scooter runs best in the midrange of 40 kmph-50kmph.
However, as you cross 75kmph, the engine struggles a bit, especially with the power generation. Hence, it is advisable to drive the Activa 5G below or around 70kmph.
Honda ensures you can quickly overtake traffic with even low-end acceleration. This makes it simpler for you to squeeze through tiny gaps and filter the crowd.
How comfortable is the Honda Activa 5G?
The 5G offers the typical scooter-like sitting stance, which is relatively neutral, i.e. relaxed and upright due to its large and flat floorboard. The seat of Activa is arguably one of the most comfortable seats in the market. It is not very large, but it is accurately cushioned and has sufficient width, ensuring comfort even for long rides.
The pillion, too, can enjoy the journey comfortably because of the wide seats. You also get a standard metal footboard for a side saddled pillion.
One complaint most of the Activa riders would have is Honda’s use of outdated link suspensions, which was present even in the first model. Hence, even after two decades, Honda continues with the link suspension. The effect of this decision is felt on the road as while riding. You will sail through smoothly on good conditioned roads. However, as soon as there is a patch or bump (which you will find plenty of on the Indian roads), the scooter might react.
This is bothersome because competitions like Aviator, which costs nearly the same, features a telescopic suspension that enhances the ride quality and comfort.
However, coming to the positive aspects, the valuable features of the scooter are commendable. You get an 18-litre storage compartment under the seat. It can easily contain small and medium-sized helmets along with a few other things. You also get a seat opening switch which is placed just beside the ignition lock.
How is the tech in Honda Activa 5G?
Honda has executed a few decent add ons in terms of technology, trying to give the 5G a modern outlook. A major highlight is the LED headlamp which adds a robotic look to the bike’s appearance.
The instrument cluster has also received a fair amount of upgrades, especially the Deluxe variant. You get a semi-digital set that features a fuel gauge, clock, single trip meter, odometer and an ECO indicator.
The latter one lights up during the optimum range of the Scooter, where it runs efficiently. The range is 40-60 kmph.
How is the mileage of the Honda Activa 5G?
Honda claims to offer a mileage of 60 kmpl in the 5G variant. The stylish scooter sports 5.3 litres of fuel capacity.
You can comfortably expect a range of above 55 kmpl considering Honda’s mileage reputation. Hence, with a full tank, you can expect to cover more than 300 kilometres of target non-stop, which is pretty laudable for a scooter.
How is the performance of the Honda Activa 5G?
Honda Activa is one of the most premium scooter brands in the market. The Honda scooter is powered by a 109 cc, single-cylinder, air-cooled engine that generates a peak power of 8 bhp at 7500 rpm along with a maximum torque of 9 Nm at 5,500 rpm.
It is well suited for a daily ride and cruising through busy roads because of its abundant mileage and comfortable handling.
The scooter offers the best performance in the initial to mid-range pickup, especially between the speed range of 40 kmph to 60 kmph. It is also the range in which the 5G offers the best fuel efficiency.
As mentioned earlier, the scooter produces no vibrations till it reaches 60 kmph of speed. You don’t get much power from the engine as it struggles beyond 60 kmph. However, the top speed, which Honda claims, is set at 83 kmph.
The Activa 5G is essentially a city-centred scooter which is evident by its variomatic transmission, which is also taken from the 4G, much like its engine. The transmission is the reason why it takes just 10.55 seconds for Activa to reach 0 to 60 kpmh.
A significant improvement that is imperative is the suspension hardware. The Activa 5G definitely requires a telescopic upgrade. The overall performance of the new Honda Activa 5G is good as it offers excellent mileage and offers maximum comfort while riding.
Is the Honda Activa 5G a good value?
At a starting price of Rs. 55 thousand, the Honda Activa 5G is fairly priced, only till you observe its competition.
While the scooter has abundant mileage and some functional features, most of its upgrades are still limited to just the cosmetics, which definitely makes it appealing. Still, it misses out on essential features like telescopic suspension, disc brakes, and even the design feels a bit outdated now.
Having said that, the Honda Activa is still one of the most reliable scooters in India. Hence, if you’re looking to buy a scooter with sufficient mileage and Activa DNA, the 5G is an obvious choice.
However, you can also opt for the latest 6G model or other scooters which offer much better features at a lower price.
Pros & Cons of Activa 5G
Pros
Refined Engine
-
Honda’s superior service network.
-
Low maintenance.
Cons
The front brake doesn’t offer enough bite.
-
Outdated suspensions.
-
The plastic quality is not very adequate.
Final Verdict on Activa 5G
Based on the features, technology and design, the Honda Activa 5G is one of the most reliable scooters in the market. Honda Activa 5G offers a smooth ride, comfortable ergonomics, along with an extended mileage of 60 kmpl. Its qualities combinedly make it an ideal scooter for long drives and daily use but at a competitive price. There is no doubt that the 5G model is a much enhanced and refined variant of its predecessors. However, most Indian riders who buy a scooter over a bike do so because of the former’s utility and features. Missing out on essential elements like telescopic suspensions and disc brakes can affect the scooter’s popularity, especially when the competitors provide the parts at the same price. However, with just a few tweaks, such as stronger brakes, telescopic suspension, and a few more functional enhancements, Honda can comfortably justify 5G’s price.
