About Royal Enfield Meteor 350

The Royal Enfield Meteor 350 cruiser motorcycle was unveiled by Royal Enfield as a replacement for the Thunderbird 350 worldwide. It makes use of a twin-cradle frame along with a more powerful engine and new connected technologies and features alongside. The Royal Enfield Meteor 350 gets its origins from the Royal Enfield Super Meteor 700 that was constructed in the 1950s and was available till the 1960s in the UK (United Kingdom) market as well. The new bike does not share all that much with the iconic original model. The new Royal Enfield Meteor 350 comes in Fireball, Stellar and Supernova variants and takes on rivals in its segment like the Benelli Imperiale 400, JAWA 42 and Honda H’Ness CB 350.

The Royal Enfield Meteor 350 has a newly built twin-cradle frame for its underpinnings while getting a powerful and brand new single cylinder SOHC four stroke 349 cc engine that churns out 20.2 bhp and 27 Nm at 6,100 rpm and 4,000 rpm respectively. The new engine is a replacement for the conventional push-rod design seen in case of older engines from Royal Enfield with primary balance shaft, overhead camshaft and more refinement. The engine is mated to a new 5-speed transmission system that offers easier shifts in comparison to older models. The bike comes with 183 Kg of kerb weight that is lighter than the Thunderbird 350 while getting a longer wheelbase which ensures greater stability at the same time.

The new Royal Enfield Meteor 350 comes with 41 mm front telescopic forks and 130 mm of travel along with twin-tube shock absorbers with 6-step preload adjustability at the rear. There is a 300 mm disc in front with twin-piston floating calipers along with a 270 mm rear wheel disc with a single piston caliper. There is standard dual channel ABS along with 19-inch and 17-inch alloy wheels at the front and rear, complete with tubeless tyres. The Royal Enfield Meteor 350 is not just retailed in the Indian market but several global markets including North America and Australia. The model is manufactured at the Chennai facility of the company. The bike has been jointly developed by the global team at Royal Enfield with inputs garnered from UK’s Technical Center and the India R&D Center of Royal Enfield.

Royal Enfield Meteor 350 Expert Review

How is the design of the Royal Enfield Meteor 350?

The Royal Enfield Meteor 350 is the premier cruiser and the design still draws from the original Thunderbird 350 in terms of its original silhouette. The only difference lies in the new color options for the Royal Enfield Meteor 350 and the revamped tail lamp portion. The fit and finishing has improved greatly along with superior quality of parts. The new rotary switches and tapered hand grips come with a retro-esque vibe although the pass switch will require some time before you start getting used to the same. The Supernova variant is the top-end variant that gets a standard pillion back-rest and windscreen and the design is quite attractive although the tail section does look a little out of place including the tail lamp and rear fender.

How does the Royal Enfield Meteor 350  ride?

The Royal Enfield Meteor 350 feels brand new while riding. The refinement levels are really impressive and the engine has no clatter at all. The revs feel free and super smooth while cruising in the city. Refinement has gone up considerably from the two valve engine and vibrations have been reduced with sheer engineering excellence. Throttle responses are crisp and accurate while fueling is top notch with the bike responding fabulously even at speeds lower than 60 kilometres per hour. It rides in a more eager and sprightly fashion.

How comfortable is the Royal Enfield Meteor 350 ?

The riding position is akin to a regular cruiser and although 765 mm of seat height has been lowered in comparison to the earlier Thunderbird 350, there are forward-set foot pegs which contribute to the slightly tight and difficult riding stance and position. The ergonomic issue here is that the new position does not offer as much comfort as the previous Thunderbird models, particularly the one from the first generation. The Meteor 350 offers good riding experiences for long distances although ergonomics still leave something to be desired. The rear suspension is on the stiffer side with the brand new double cradle chassis that make the bike more planted and sure footed even when it is venturing around a corner or taking a curve. The tyres do not offer ample confidence for going full throttle. Softer rubber may have ensured better grip levels in this case. The bike feels a little edgy around corners when you push it harder. The new chassis does improve overall riding dynamics and comfort levels. Braking and stopping prowess is adequate though, enhancing comfort by a great deal.

How’s the tech?

The Royal Enfield Meteor 350 comes with a striking asymmetric twin pod instrument console. The bigger dial has the analogue speedometer while the LCD cluster offers trip meter, clock, odometer, fuel gauge and gear position indicator read-outs. The right smaller pod also shows a larger clock read-out while functioning as the turn by turn navigation display too. This works through the Royal Enfield Tripper app complete with Bluetooth connectivity. Navigation works smoothly and other features include creating ride events. There is the Make It Yours customization feature that buyers can use for personalizing their model.

How’s the mileage of the Royal Enfield Meteor 350 ?

The Royal Enfield Meteor 350 offers decent fuel economy of 41.9 kmpl.

How is the performance of the Royal Enfield Meteor 350 ?

The Royal Enfield Meteor 350 gets a new twin-cradle frame for underpinnings while getting power from a single cylinder 349 cc four stroke SOHC mill that churns out a whopping 20.2 bhp at 6100 rpm and 27 Nm of maximum torque at 4000 rpm. The new motor is a replacement for the conventional pushrod design seen on the previous Royal Enfield engines. There is now a primary balancer shaft accompanied by the overhead camshaft, enabling higher revs and better refinement in turn. There is a new 5-speed gearbox that is paired to the engine for ensuring convenient and hassle-free gear shifting as compared to previous models. Kerb weight stands at 183 kg, making the Meteor 350 considerably lighter than the Royal Enfield Thunderbird 350. The wheelbase is also longer in comparison to the Thunderbird 350, enabling enhanced straight-line stability.

Is the Royal Enfield Meteor 350  good value for money?

The Royal Enfield Meteor 350 is a value for money proposition at its price point. For starters, there is ample brand value on offer along with imposing road presence in tandem with improved refinement and ample engine power. It works wonderfully as a cruiser, offers decent fuel economy and is equipped with Bluetooth connectivity and navigation among other features.

  • Which is better Royal Enfield Meteor 350 or JAWA 42?

The Royal Enfield Meteor 350 offers a starting price of Rs. 2.05 lakh (ex-showroom) as compared to Rs. 1.93 lakh (ex-showroom) for the JAWA 42. The Royal Enfield Meteor 350 however makes for a better value proposition owing to its own positioning, power, refinement, features and better mileage.

  • Which model of Royal Enfield Meteor 350 is best?

The Stellar and Supernova variants at Rs. 2.11 lakh and Rs. 2.22 lakh (ex-showroom respectively) have a nominal price difference of Rs. 10,000 between them. They offer the same engine, power figures, mileage and other features. The difference is that the Stellar variant gets the chrome exhaust setup and handlebar complete with a backrest for enhanced comfort of pillion riders. The top-end Supernova variant gets machined finish wheels, a unique seat cover, chrome indicators and a windscreen. This adds greater value to the overall package for a nominal price difference.

The latter will always have its own set of dedicated loyalists and fans but on paper the Royal Enfield Meteor 350 is a better value offering for its lower price, better mileage and near-similar power and performance.

The Bajaj Avenger Cruise is considerably cheaper than the Royal Enfield Meteor 350 at Rs. 1.23 lakh (ex-showroom) onwards while the latter comes for Rs. 1.79 lakh (ex-showroom) onwards. The Enfield offers nominally higher mileage of 41.88 Kmpl as compared to 40 Kmpl offered by the Bajaj Avenger Cruise 220. Coming to the Royal Enfield , the brand is known for the vibration machine .But from this bike the engine was changed and entered a new J platform which decreased a hell of vibrations and also it's comes with a double rod chasis which makes the vibration less. The seat height is even comfortable for short riders and we can cruise at 100 speed for 200 km without any king of pain and the colour and the model is noticable to everyone. When you cruise at 100 you get a little vibrations in the foot pegs and at the handle but it is not that noticable and you get a mileage of 33 to 35 and if you cruise at the speed 50 to 70 you can get a smooth ride and a good mileage of 43 to 47 and that was a great mileage offered by a RE bike and overall my experience with this bike was awesome and I'm loved my bike a lot and it is the best in my view in this segment.

All You Need to Know About the Meteor 350

The Royal Enfield 350 cc bike is an iconic offering in its own right. From the 1950s and well into the 21st century, it has been the central product in the Royal Enfield portfolio. More than four decades have seen it being built over the cast iron pushrod engine which had a thorough update only around the advent of the Millennium. There was the introduction of the very first AVL engine back in the year 1999 while the classic four-speed right-hand side gear shifter was for the Machismo 350 AVL. The same engine was then paired to a 5-speed gearbox with a left-hand side gear shifter that was used in the first generation Royal Enfield Thunderbird 350 AVL.

Royal Enfield launched the UCE or unit construction engine in the year 2009 with integrated gearbox for both its 500 cc and 350 cc models. The new Thunderbird 350 also received this new UCE 350 engine that was used for the Classic 350 and Bullet 350 too. In 2020, Royal Enfield unveiled its new Meteor 350, the replacement for its Thunderbird 350 which has been slotted as a premier global offering. It has a new engine, design and chassis while being the most modern and futuristic Royal Enfield product that will be sold both in India and abroad.

The Royal Enfield Meteor 350 makes use of a new 350 cc platform and the new engine and chassis are the product of the global team at the company along with inputs taken from the UK Technical Centre and the R&D centre in Chennai. The Meteor 350 was developed over three years although the main aim was retention of the feel and essence of the 350 cc single while lowering vibrations, enhancing refinement, making the gearbox smoother and also ramping up the global appeal of this cruiser. The air cooled single cylinder oil cooled engine has higher displacement of 349 cc as compared to 346 cc earlier with the bore increasing to 72 mm from 70 mm. Stroke has come down to 85.8 mm from 90 mm previously. The pushrod architecture has been replaced by the single overhead camshaft along with a gear primary drive in place of chain. The new engine dishes out only 1 bhp higher than the previous engine at 20.2 bhp although this comes at 6100 rpm. Peak torque has reduced to 27 Nm at 4000 rpm. The new engine ensures a wider spread of torque throughout the rev spectrum, commencing from 2400 rpm and going till 4500 rpm. The engine has a primary balance shift that helps in lowering vibrations, a known feature even for the UCE 350 engine. The five speed gearbox now offers more accurate and smoother shifts while there is the overdrive 5th gear used for seamless cruising on the highway. The clutch is on the lighter side while the light clutch actuation, ignition and fuel calibration make the Royal Enfield Meteor 350 a great motorcycle even at speeds fit for the city. There are zero false neutrals and notchy shifting is absent while engine refinement is also clearly visible. There is a brand new chassis with the twin down-tube frame that has reportedly been tested extensively over various terrains and in several regions across thousands of kilometres. The Royal Enfield Meteor 350 feels brand new from the outset and the refinement and lack of engine clatter also enhance the ride quality. Vibrations have been lowered with skilful engineering while throttle responses are crisp. While maximum speed is still at 120 Kmph, the absence of engine vibrations and refinement enabling effortless cruising for hours at a time even when you are at 100-110 Kmph. This is a huge improvement in comparison to the UCE engine. The stiffer rear suspension setup and double cradle chassis contribute towards making the bike feel more planted and eager, particularly when you are curving or cornering. However, softer tyre rubber may have improved grip levels. There are 19 inch and 17 inch front and rear wheels along with standard alloys and tubeless tyres. There is also dual channel ABS (anti-lock braking system) as a standard feature. The 300 mm front and 270 mm rear discs also offer ample stopping power.
