About Piaggio Vespa

The Notte 125 from Piaggio Vespa is the most affordable from its scooter segment. It was previously available in the BS-IV variant and is now launched with the mandatory BS-VI engine. Even though it’s the most affordable Vespa, compared to the other scooters, the price of the Notte 125 starts at ₹ 95,692.

The premium scooter is available only in one variant, Piaggio Vespa Notte 125 BS-VI and offers a single colour, which is matte black. The reason behind the all-blacked out appearance is hidden in the name of the scooter. In Italian, “Notte” translates to “night” and hence, the all-black exterior.

The Notte 125 closely resembles the Vespa VXL 125 and is said to be a cosmetic variant of the latter. No chrome is visible as an attempt to stay true to its ‘Notte’ appearance. Due to this, even the wheels are all black.

The premium scooter is powered by a single-cylinder, air-cooled, 125 cc engine which generates a max power of 9.78 bhp at 7500 rpm and a peak torque of 9.6 Nm at 5,500 rpm, just like the one in VXL 125. The Vespa scooter has a mileage of 60 kmpl which is coupled with a fuel tank capacity of 7.4 L. One can easily expect a riding range of over 300 km with a full tank.

Both the front and the rear end of the cosmetic scooter feature drum brakes and are equipped with the Combi-braking system, weighing 114kg.

The BS-VI variant of the Notte 125 is nearly ₹ 17k costlier than its BS-IV counterpart. In terms of features, there is no significant addition that can justify the surge in price except for the advanced and imminent update of BS-VI, an OBD port and fuel injection.

In terms of competition, the Vespa Notte 125 competes with Yamaha Fascino 125, Honda Activa 125, TVS NTorq and Suzuki Burgman Street in terms of the price tag. But when compared based on specification, there is no competition for this premium scooter except for other Vespa scooters and those from Aprilia, which is Vespa’s sister brand.

Piaggio Vespa Expert Review

How is the design of Piaggio Vespa Notte 125?

Speaking about the design, Piaggio Vespa Notte is elegant and features the typical Vespa rear design. The design lines resemble the bike’s predecessor, Vespa VXL 125. The single variant scooter sports an all-black exterior that perfectly fits the name “Notte.”

The appearance of the Vespa Notte 125 is simple, minimal and premium. At the front, there is a round headlight along with the standard corner lights along with 10-inch alloy wheels.

The instrument cluster comprises only the essential features such as the odometer, speedometer, premium switches, and a storage compartment that is easy to open and close and all of them are painted with matte black to comply with the scooter’s “Notte” look.

Opposite the storage compartment, right below the seat, there is a hook that is used to support carry bags or shopping bags. It is quite a utilitarian design. The tail end design showcases the well-known Vespa design.

The storage capacity under the seat is not too huge, but it is enough to accommodate a small or medium-sized helmet.

There is absolutely no comparison in terms of fit and finish when it comes to the Notte’s matte black finish. It’s just premium and gives the whole scooter a rather royal look.

How does the Piaggio Vespa Notte 125 ride?

As you begin your ride, you realise why Vespa is known for its premium quality, as everything you touch feels premium, from the handlebar’s grip to the switches.

Speaking of the BS6 engine, which produces 9.78 bhp of max power at 7500 rpm and a peak torque of 9.6 at 5500 rpm. The revised engine feels more refined and smoother along with its direct throttle.

The initial pickup is very refined and feels smooth. Up to 60 kmph the engine runs effectively without any hindrance. The scooter runs best in the midrange of 40 kmph-50kmph.

However, as you cross 60kmph, the engine struggles a bit, especially with the power output. Hence, it is advisable to drive the Notte below or around 60kmph.

Compared to the BS4 variants, the upgraded model has a refinement that can be felt while riding the Notte, enhancing comfort and joy as you can quickly overtake traffic with even low-end acceleration.

The weight of the Notte also enhances the ride by making it fun and easy to filter through heavy traffic. Moreover, the light build of the Vespa Notte 125 makes it simple for you to squeeze through tiny gaps and filter the crowd.

How comfortable is the Piaggio Vespa Notte 125?

The Piaggio Vespa Notte feels light on weight, making it easier to cruise through heavy traffic or even off roads. Speaking about the latter, riders usually feel that a scooter might not offer a comfortable ride on rough roads due to the smaller wheels, but that’s not the case with Notte 125.

But the surprise element of comfort in Notte 125 is the suspension and how nicely Vespa has tuned it. You can take on even potholes and bumps, which are plenty on the Indian roads, and yet not feel the discomfort of the jerk as the suspension can absorb all the sudden jolts.

Even the seat plays a part in ensuring the rider is comfortable and contributes to absorbing the jerks. Both the suspension and the seat combined, you can expect a superior ride quality while cruising through the city in the Notte 125.

The Notte 125 is equipped with a CBS or the combi-braking system, which is effective while riding, but you would expect some enhancement in the braking department at the price range.

While the rear brake is effective and comfortable, the same cannot be said about the front brake.

The Notte 125 sports one of the most premium quality seats, enhancing the ride quality and comfort. There is also abundant leg space available for a comfortable ride. However, the raised area in the middle hinders the comfort to support carry bags and also puts in question the purpose of the hook.

How is the tech in Piaggio Vespa Notte 125?

There is not much visible shift in terms of tech in the Notte 125. You get all the standard tech features like the round headlight, tail light, along with the turn signals. The central panel features an analogue speedometer, an odometer and a light indicator, and a few more essentials. However, Vespa has equipped the scooter with Bluetooth connectivity, which adds to the users’ comfort.

How is the mileage of Piaggio Vespa Notte 125?

Vespa claims to offer a mileage of 60 kmpl in the BS6 variant. The stylish scooter sports 7.4 litres of fuel capacity.

You can comfortably expect a range of above 50 kmpl considering Vespa’s mileage reputation and the BS6 upgrade. Hence, with a full tank, you can expect to cover more than 300 kilometres of target non-stop, which is pretty commendable for a scooter.

How is the performance of Piaggio Vespa Notte 125?

Piaggio Vespa Notte 125 is one of the most premium scooters in the market. The Vespa scooter is powered by a 124 cc, single-cylinder, air-cooled engine that generates a peak power of 9.78 bhp at 7500 rpm along with a maximum torque of 9.6 Nm at 5500 rpm. The BS6 engine has a fuel injector which has further enhanced the refinement of the engine.

It is well suited for a daily ride and cruising through busy roads because of its abundant mileage and comfortable handling.

The scooter offers the best performance in the initial to mid-range pickup, especially between the speed range of 40 kmph to 60 kmph. As mentioned earlier, the bike produces no vibrations till it reaches the latter speed. You don’t get much power from the engine as it struggles beyond 60 kmph. However, the top speed, which Vespa claims, is set at 90 kmph.

Another significant improvement that is imperative is the braking hardware, especially the front brake, which, as mentioned above, is pretty average.

The overall performance of the new Piaggio Vespa Notte is good as it offers excellent mileage and offers maximum comfort while riding.

Is the Piaggio Vespa Notte 125 a good value?

At ₹ 95,000, the single variant Piaggio Vespa Notte 125 has premium yet simple designs in the scooter class. The fit and finish of the paint combined with the all-blacked body give it a premium touch. When you add to this the comfortable seat, the whole game just levels up.

It’s not just the appeal and design of the Vespa Notte 125. If you can overlook the braking, it is undoubtedly a very efficient and effective scooter.

Mileage wise, the scooter gives over 60 kmpl and boasts a fuel tank of 7.4 litres, making it efficient for long rides. The suspension, refined engine and ergonomics make up for the missing components and enhance the comfort for long rides.

However, coming to practicality, there are some aspects where Vespa Notte lags.

Final Verdict on Vespa

The Piaggio Vespa Notte offers a smooth ride and comfortable ergonomics, along with an extended mileage of 60 kmpl. As mentioned above, there is no match for its elite appeal in the market. All of its qualities combined make it an ideal scooter for long drives and daily use but at a comparatively high price. There is no doubt that the BS6 model is a much enhanced and refined variant of its predecessors. But most Indian riders who buy a scooter over a bike do so because of the former’s utility and practicality. However, as pointed out above, there are some areas where Piaggio Vespa can improve Notte’s practical use. Hence, if you have a budget of near Rs. 1 lac and are looking for a premium scooter, sports a potent engine, is manageable and provides excellent comfort, especially during long drives, Piaggio Vespa Notte 125 becomes an ideal choice. However, with just a few tweaks, such as stronger brakes, some functional enhancements, along with some other additions, Vespa can comfortably justify Notte’s high price.
