About Yamaha MT-15

The Yamaha MT-15 was an eagerly awaited model in the Indian market and offers street fighter esque practicality while offering the performance that the R15 is known for providing. The underpinnings are similar for both these motorcycles, providing more choices for customers as well. They can now choose between the aggressive R15 which is more focused on the track and also the sporty and attractive MT-15 which is more practical for everyday usage. The MT-15 comes for Rs. 1,44,900-1,47,900 which is a competitive price point in the roadster category. It does manage to create an impression even when paired up against formidable rivals like the TVS Apache RTR 200 4V, KTM 125 Duke and Bajaj Pulsar NS 200 to name a few.

This time around, the Yamaha MT-15 offers a refreshing look while sporting a design with bold touches and cues. It is one of the boldest models from Yamaha till date while adhering to the design language that is visible for larger models like the MT-10 and MT-09. The design is aggressive for the Yamaha MT-15 while the bike has oodles of road presence as well. There are twin slot DRLs (daytime running lights) along with a single LED headlight which is positioned at the center. The transformer-esque facial design makes the bike stand out and this is further accentuated by the chiseled fuel tank with its plastic belly pan and the striking radiator shrouds. The single piece step-up seat is now more chiseled as well, while offering enhanced comfort courtesy of the extended tail portion which accommodates the LED tail light.

The instrument cluster comes from the YZF-R15 V3.0 and also comes with an LCD display setup. The unit also gets a digital speedometer along with a bar-esque tachometer and fuel gauge in tandem with an ABS warning lamp. There is also an odometer along with Trip 1 and Trip 2, gear shift lift indicator, VVA indicator and clock. The Yamaha MT-15 also comes with a single cylinder 155 cc liquid cooled mill which is similar to the one used in the R15 and it gets VVA (Variable Valve Actuation) technology, dishing out a fabulous 19 bhp at 10,000 rpm along with 14.7 Nm of maximum torque at 8,500 RPM. This engine is mated to a 6-speed transmission system while getting an assist and slipper clutch as a standard feature. Top speed stands at 118 Kmph for the Yamaha MT-15. The bike also uses a Deltabox frame by way of underpinnings while coming with telescopic front forks (with 130 mm of travel) and a rear monoshock (with 97 mm travel). There is a single front 282 mm disc along with a rear 220 mm disc. There is also single-channel ABS as a standard feature. The bike also offers 100/80 R17 front tyres and 140/70 R17 tyres.

It also gets VVA (Variable Valve Actuation) technology for added punch while the engine dishes out 19 BHP at 10,000 RPM while peak torque figures stand at 14.7 Nm at 8,500 RPM. These figures are quite impressive for a bike in its class. There is a 6-speed gearbox paired to the engine along with an assist and slipper clutch as well which are standard features. The top speed of the motorcycle stands at 118 kmph as well.

Is the Yamaha MT-15   good value for money?

The Yamaha MT-15 does offer good value for money from a regular buyer’s perspective. It is more practical and convenient than the R15 which is more track-focused and comes with single channel ABS and other safety features like the engine kill switch, front and rear disc brakes and tubeless tyres in addition to the LCD cluster, good features, decent mileage and amazing road presence. One of the most comfortable city commuters in this segment this is. The bike is nimble, agile and ready to swift and filter through the heavy traffic at any time of the day. The only drawback is that there is no Dual Channel ABS and at this price point I'd to like say.. it really needs to be Dual Channel ABS. After all this one sports a Yamaha engine and it doesn't fail to impress me. But.. hey there is no perfect Bike and this ain't one either. Y'all can enjoy some drama with no rear ABS and have some real fun with this ride.

So to begin with, Yamaha R15 V3 has blown my mind with its new and fresh techs, the refinement (Yes, it's a Yamaha ), etc but the only thing which was bothering me was the aggressive riding position. R15 v3 is a great bike for the tracks but I prefer upright position while covering larger distances and that's when Yamaha MT 15 came into the picture. Continue Reading:

All You Need to Know About the MT-15

The Yamaha MT-15 is a popular street-fighter 155 cc roadster from Yamaha India which majorly aims at capturing the interest of millennial buyers. It offers a muscular, aggressive, stylish and naked design while sharing underpinnings with the popular yet track themed YZF-R15 from Yamaha as well. It gets the same chassis and engine while also sharing other features. The MT-15 does lose some features in its Indian avatar including the upside-down forks for the global-spec model and the aluminum-swingarm of the Indian R15 V3.0.

The design is striking while the bike gets ample road presence indeed. It may not be as conventionally attractive but it offers a rugged appeal that is hard to match. The front fascia is styled aggressively and in a futuristic manner. It comes with twin slot DRLs (daytime running lights) and the LED headlight is neatly positioned between the twain, enabling a more robotic and highly contemporary transformer-esque design. There are no making bones about the fact that it is a polarizing design by all means. However, it is something that will certainly catch the attention of people on the road. There is the chiseled fuel tank along with the extended radiator shrouds for a more powerful look while the plastic belly pan rounds off the look to perfection. The rear portion is sleek and proportionately styled with the attractive LED tail lamp completing the design to perfection. The Yamaha MT-15 is one of the most striking bikes out there in its segment. The instrument panel has been taken straight away from the R15 and it does not get a few equipment bits for India. Hence, no USD forks are there while the wheels are also shared with the R15. There is just single-channel ABS in place of the R15’s dual-channel ABS that is available currently. The upright position for riding, flat handlebar and sportier design stance makes the bike attractive for riders. The millennial crowd will appreciate the sporty and superior ergonomics on this bike. The engine roars up with a familiar note since it is the same one as the YZF-R15 and the exhaust is also the same. The single cylinder 155 cc engine is liquid cooled and dishes out maximum power of 19 bhp at 10,000 rpm along with peak torque of 14.7 Nm at 8,500 rpm. The lower-end variant gets maximum power figures of 18.2 bhp as well. There is a 6-speed gearbox that is similar as the one used for the R15 and a standard slipper clutch. The final drive ratio is quite different this time around. This helps the MT-15 enjoy higher pulling power at both mid and low revs for superior tractability, especially while cutting through traffic and across stop lights. Yamaha has already stated that its MT-15 accelerates swifter than its R15 in the 0 to 80 kilometres per hour (kmph) band although top-end performance is where it slightly misses out. The maximum speed is somewhere at 118 kmph for the Yamaha MT-15 while it stands at around 129 kmph for the R15. The Yamaha MT-15 comes with kerb weight of 138 Kg which makes it at least 4 Kg lighter than the YZF R15. There is good cornering with more precision and the bike feels eager to respond and the suspension makes sure that road manners are impressive even in congested daily traffic. On longer highway stretches, riders may desire a little more punch and power. Highway drives may not always be that enjoyable although they will not be bland for sure.
